What We Offer

“Representation must never be seen, except in strategic and practical terms, as an end in itself. Too many union officers see it as a question of communication and merely sitting on the appropriate committee. The purpose of representation is to secure educational and social change.”

Digby Jacks, former NUS President

Magnetic Ideals offer training and consultancy for Students’ Unions as we believe that student unionism and student politics have the potential to inspire their members to make positive change in the world.   We can help you look at how you make positive change for your members and your society.  We offer support with communication in your union, evaluation and monitoring structures, engaging hard to reach groups, student-led research, annual quality reporting and evidence based campaigining, leadership and much more.  We offer specialisms around working with colleges, supporting smaller unions to develop and supporting unions through the Higher Education Review process.

We bring a breadth of sector experience to your union.  Our consultants have experience working for NUS UK, NUS Scotland, SPARQS (Student Participation in Quality Scotland), Education Scotland, local students’ unions, local authorities and a variety of community and voluntary organsations.  In addition they have worked with the Quality Assurance Agency in developing the Quality Code over the past few years, and The Student Engagement Partnership on the Annual Quality Reporting project, as well as having previous experience as sabbatical officers and being active members of national student committees.

We offer bespoke training and can work with you to develop training within your organisation to meet the needs of your staff.  Uniquely, we will also work with you to ensure that you are able to deliver this training in-house in the future by offering a free half day of training to staff members in how to deliver each of the sessions.
